The United Nations Staff Union is established pursuant to Chapter 8 of the Staff Regulations and Rules. When a staff member signs a contract with the United Nations, he/she receives a copy of the Staff Regulations and Rules. These rules form the basis for the staff members' working relationship with the United Nations and outline your rights, obligations and entitlements. The purpose of the Union is: |
- To contribute to the promotion of the objectives of the Charter of the United Nations, in particular, by the efficient discharge of functions assigned to the Secretariat;
- To promote and safeguard the rights, interests and welfare of all members of staff of the United Nations assigned to the Secretariat;
- To maintain relations and cooperation with staff organizations and similar bodies of international and/or intergovernmental organizations, in particular, the specialized agencies;
- To provide the Secretary-General and the Member States the views of the staff on issues affecting staff welfare and conditions of service, and seek resolution of issues arising therefrom.
How the Union works
The leadership, President and First and Second Vice-Presidents, is elected by the staff-at-large in a single ticket. The President is the principal executive officer of the Union. The First Vice-President and Second Vice-President are the second and third principal officers of the Union.
The Executive Board, executive body of the Union, comprises the President, First and Second Vice-Presidents, and six officers elected from among the Staff Council. The Secretary, Treasurer and Rapporteur are the first, second and third officers of the Board and shall be replaced in their respective function by their assistants, as necessary.
Over six thousand staff members working at the United Nations Headquarters are represented by their respective staff representatives and alternate representatives at the Staff Council. The Staff Council is elected every two (2) years and composed of thirty-seven units. The Staff Council shall determine its operational policy, except where such policy is determined by General Meeting or referendum.
